The Civil Rights movement of the early 60s, as led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and inspired by the principles of non-violence, was profoundly altered by the assassination of Dr. King.

The rise of the Black Panthers reflected a new approach to demanding the same rights and respect as whites--the willingness to carry and potentially use weapons in self-defense.
